Contaminated Sites
The Department of Water Affairs has in the last ten years or so tightened up on its approach to companies complying with environmental legislation. This is probably in keeping with international trends and certainly 15 years ago the UK was in full swing in terms of site remediation and the clean up of contaminated sites. South Africa has to some extent followed suit and we have had experience in characterising the contamination of a number of sites in and around Durban, in Richards Bay and in England.
We have the skills to install, sample and monitor groundwater monitoring wells, and to assess the need for remediation. Risk Based Corrective Action (Rebecca) is used in this regard and should it be necessary we are able to provide recommendations for remediating contamination beneath a site through our partnerships in the industry. Sampling protocols are stringent and if the need arises we will use international laboratories to test for suspected contaminants. Groundwater contamination and the migration of contaminant plumes are closely tied in with hydrogeological studies and GeoZone can also bring these skills to the table.
