GeoZone - Applied Geology & Geotechnics
Rock Engineering and Codes of Practice
GeoZone has formed an alliance with Mr Rod White, who has for many years looked after the rock engineering of many of the mines in Mpumalanga and Northern KwaZulu Natal and before that he spent time on the Zambian Copper Belt. With his M.Sc in Rock Engineering from Imperial College (arguably the finest institution on earth for this kind of training) and his experience, his credentials are impeccable. However he feels it is time to withdraw from the fray to some extent, and sees his role as consultant and mentor to GeoZone. We look forward to a long and fruitful association with him and being in a position to assist the mining industry with their rock mechanics and stability issues, as well as Codes of Practice.
Rod Whyte's expertise dovetails perfectly into Gerald Davie's tunnelling and mining training and experience. Leeds University were very keen on their rock mechanics, and much of the M.Sc course was spent in the Rock Mechanics Department under the auspices of Dr Robert Fowell and Dr Brook. In the engineering geology department itself huge amounts of time were spent characterising and measuring the behaviour of rock joints. Dr Steve Hencher was part of the teaching team at the time, as is famous for co-authoring a seminal paper on the shear strength of rock joints using the Golder Shear Box.
